mental toughness in beach volleyball
TriB Beach Volleyball Club Participated in a Tournament this past weekend and here’s what coach Gene Bingle has to say.
For the gold medal, this tournament came down to our players, whose match went to three sets.
I talk to the players a lot about mental toughness, but I often wonder if they can really grasp what I mean, you know… because most of them are teenagers.
Mental toughness is so important in beach volleyball games because there are no substitutions and there’s nowhere to hide.
That’s something that’s much different from indoor volleyball, where lots of the players first meet me. They’ve been playing indoors before hitting the beach.
If they’re having a bad game when they are playing indoors, the coach just takes them out and puts in a sub.
However, when they are playing beach volleyball, they have to figure it out when they’re having a bad day.
The team really kept their composure in the third set. They were nervous after the second set, but I had them do a little breathing before the third set, and they jumped on top really quickly and then eventually finished it out with a win!
